Notes on sources

Carypics describes hotels as buildings. This page explains where that information comes from and what we do when it runs out.

What we use

Three kinds of material, all of them public: the hotel's own website and published press material; street-level and cadastral mapping; and writing about the building itself — newspaper coverage, heritage listings and local history.

How entries are checked

A fact goes into an entry only when it can be traced to at least one of those sources. When two sources conflict, the entry keeps only the part they agree on. When nothing reliable can be found, the detail is left out. Gaps are never filled by inference.

Building types

When an entry says what kind of building a hotel occupies, it uses the wording of the source. That may describe the job the building was originally built for — a bathhouse, a hospital, a prison — rather than the hotel it is today.

Keeping entries current

Hotels change hands, close for renovation or shut for the season. Entries are rechecked from time to time, and anything that can no longer be confirmed is removed.

What we do not do

We do not rate, review or rank hotels, take bookings or accept payment for inclusion. Corrections are welcome at hello@carypics.com.
